Southern Gateway

The Southern Gateway is the biggest regeneration project that the city has seen for decades.

The project will involve transforming this largely brownfield area into a vibrant and attractive new quarter, with the aim of providing:

  • new homes
  • business and retail space
  • leisure and tourism facilities;
  • improved transport links with a focus on cycling, walking and public transport, plus
  • Improved public realm and open spaces.

The aim is to better connect the centre of Chichester to other city locations such as the canal basin and the public transport hub.

The redevelopment of this site is now underway.

With demolition of the old buildings concluded and the enabling works, including ground stabilisation and concrete crushing works complete, work on the main build could start and having done so in the last few months it continues apace.

The steel frame for the main central Block 1 has already been erected and the substrate structure to which the roof and wall cladding panels are attached is being fitted to the frame.  Work has also started on erecting the steel frames for the other four blocks, starting with Blocks 4 and 5 and the structures are quickly rising out of the ground.  The site drainage works are underway and are progressing well.

With the progress made to date everything is currently in place to achieve the late summer 2022 completion envisaged in the construction programme.
